China comes to Huddersfield

Hundreds of students and residents gather last week at the University of Huddersfield to celebrate the Chinese New Year in style

Huddersfield's Historic Greenhead Park has been undergoing a major makeover thanks to funding provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Town First Independent Business Group member, Tony Coleta, will reopen his Pavilion cafe in December with the rest of the park due to open to the public in the spring. More to follow soon.

Huddersfield's close proximity to the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales and Moors makes it an ideal place from which to explore the UK countryside. At night, Huddersfield's cultured and relaxed nightlife offers a welcome alternative to corporate Leeds. The Lawrence Batley screens art house films and has a full dance, theatre and opera programme. Venture further out into the suburbs and villages of Huddersfield and you wiil uncover a series of charming real ale pubs, many of which offer live music or comedy at least once a week.

From Indian to Italian and Bengali to Baltic, the diversity of our community is reflected in the variety and quality of our local shops. Much of what is sold is farmed and produced locally and we are blessed with two historic (and covered) food market at either end of town. Huddersfield is one of the few towns of its size without a Starbucks - instead we have a range of independent coffee and tea shops. With excellent service and the best coffee in Yorkshire, we plan on keeping it that way.

Huddersfield is a hotbed of sports activity and sporting tradition, boasting among other things: The Drakes Huddersfield Cricket League; the Giants Super League team (and the birthplace of Rugby League); and Huddersfield Town (Terriers) League One football team. It also has an extremely strong tradition in junior sports development, largely dude ot the work of the Pennine School Sports Partnership and is the home of Carpark Cricket.
